Well, It's not set in fuedal Japan. But it's in 1889. The anime is Nadia: The secret of Blue Water. This anime is great, it goes from one place to the other. There are new friends you meet along the way and many new surprises like spoiler[Nadia has a brother]and things like that. It is also a funny comedy show. Join Nadia on her quest to uncover the secret of blue water, with her friends Jean, Marie, Hanson, Sanson, King, and Grandis, and Miss Electra, and Captain Nemo on a technological filled submarine with many secrets.

Nadia isn't really fantasy, though.

Recent titles Twelve Kingdoms and Scrapped Princess are two of the best fantasy anime out there, while somewhat older titles Ruin Explorers (a more comedy-oriented series) and Weathering Continent (a very serious one) are worth checking out. None are set in feudal Japan, though.

Escaflowne is a classic anime fantasy, and worth viewing by any fantasy fan. It isn't set in feudal Japan however.

Good Choice... I love Escaflowne. And Nadia is more the Science Fiction type. But I love that too.

Record of Lodoss War OAV is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of fantasy anime. It's probably my all-time favorite title of that genre. However, since you said feudal Japan, I'm afraid this may not cut it. Lodoss is very high on the European influences, you know, the classic kings, knights, trolls, dragons, and that sort of setting. 13 episodes.

.hack//SIGN is also an excellent series. It's set in a video game world, but it's an MMPORPG. Great animation, great music, and a very good story. 26 episodes.

Another great one is Visions of Escaflowne. A lot of the same thing with Lodoss, though the only presence of real technology you may not like is the mecha they have. But trust me, it's an element that really adds to the show's worth. The soundtrack is also co-composed by my favorite composer: Yoko Kanno. It's a title worth seeing by any anime fan. And since you like Inu Yasha, it's also dubbed by the same people (if you like the dub, that is).

There's also Escaflowne the Movie, but I'd recommend you watch the TV series first because it and the movie are very different in nature, and I wouldn't want you to get any preconeived notions and make any possible bad judgements.

As for feudal Japan, I would recommend Ninja Scroll (the movie) if you want the supernatural stuff. An intersting note to add is that the music was also done by Kaoru Wada (who did Inu Yasha, in case you didn't know). Although, not knowing how old you are, I'm not sure if it's the right thing for you to start out with. Also try Samurai Deeper Kyo (26 episodes), though I've only seen the first 5 episodes, so I'm not sure how to rate it just yet. It seems OK, but remember, only I'm only 5 eps in... Anime catgrin.

Hmm.. If you want something that's feudal (or close to it) but without the magic, try Samurai Champloo or my absolute favorite anime of all-time, Rurouni Kenshin. If you happen to start Kenshin though, I recommend you go in this order:

-TV Series (episodes 1-62)
-The movie (optional)
-Tsuioku-hen (the first OAV that is also known by the crappy, bastardizing, but marketable, misnomer, "Samurai X: Trust & Betrayl")
-Seisouhen (the second OAV, a.k.a the crappy, bastardizing, and poor substitute for Jinchuu, "Samurai X: Reflections")

Please, PLEASE watch Kenshin in Japanese though. Smile

And finally, please also give X (the TV series) a shot. It's a masterpiece of Apocolyptic drama with a lot of fantasy elements all cleverly wielded into a present day setting.

This is all I'll put for now, as I don't want to ramble, but I hope this helps Wink.

Berserk and Twelve Kingdoms, hands down. I mean, hell, I find Twelve Kingdoms is better than The lord of the rings. Oh, and, I have yet to see Scrapped Princess, but I sure hope to see it.

How do people get Kenshin from a fantasy request?
Anyhow, Twelve Kingdoms is the thing you want (its set in a wrold that resembles mythical china and a bit of Japan too). Other great choices would be Berserk (darker fantasy) and Scrapped Princess.

Berserk

Gah!! Mad How in the heck did I forget this one? Yes, I will highly recommend this title as well. In terms of pure feudal fantasy, I'd say this series has the best all-around character and plot development (outside of Kenshin, but Berserk is more European influenced, a la Lodoss War, and thus not feudal Japan).

However, like I said about Ninja Scroll, I'm not going to recommend this unless you can handle very high amounts of violence and that sort of stuff. This show is definately not for kids or those who act like them. This is extremely mature, and if you're really young and your parents are against this kind of stuff, don't let them see this!

(*slaps self in the face and sighs*) Whew.... Sorry, this show is another masterpiece, in my opinion, but for the sake of being a responsible adult, I'm just trying to give you fair warning (if you're just a kid that is, and I'm sorry if I'm mistaking your age Smile). But please, check this out if you think you're mature enough. Wink

Nobody mentioned Fushigi Yuugi. Set in ancient China.

I've not watched many episodes and it's still sitting somewhere at home, but from what I've seen back then, I think it's nice.

Scrapped Princess is good, although it doesn't really fit. spoiler[Since it is really a high tech anime]. Now fantasy includes one I am surprised it wasn't mentioned yet, Slayers. The show is good, the movies are good, and at least one OVA is damn funny. The novels may come soon, but even if they don't Slayers is a complete experience. Now if you are newer to anime, you might not know Slayers. It's good, look it up.

Oh, shit, I forgot Lunar Legend Tsukihime. Well, not really the anime, but the doujin visual novel the anime was based on. It is modern fantasy at it's finest.
