Nominating:
Letopanyu Spoor Crest/Banner of the Stars pic
Type of Cool: General Cool
Why she is cool: Spoor has a colourful personality and a formidable presence. Her amusing comments and eccentric behaviour makes her a highly memorable person that leaves a vivid and lasting impression despite her limited time screen.

Voting for:
Shizuo Heiwajima Durarara!!

I meant to vote for Ginko, but forgot in my batch post. Silly me.
Also, putting in a vote for Roy Mustang and Letopanyu Spoor.

Voting against:
Lucy, Elfen Lied
I understand why she's here, but I think it's too much to overlook the point that she frequently and uncontrollably switches personalities to one with the intellectual capacity of a three-year old.

I'm not aware that Nyuu was nominated. If the Count is considered different from Edmond Dantes, then surely Lucy should be separated from Nyuu.

You are too kind for Nyuu, a three year old child has a richer vocabulary.

Yeah, but that's reasonable since Edmond Dantes falls under General Cool, while Nyuu pees herself.

Edmond Dantes is at worst a normal person, Nyuu is a burden to Lucy and the rest of the cast. I don't recall the Count suddenly losing control and becoming a person with a one-word vocabulary during a life-or-death fight as Lucy did with Bando.

I would, but Key discouraged the posting of weakly/marginally qualified candidates; otherwise, I'd be renominating Shana.

Wait. Vegeto from DBZ? Fusion of two characters? It's a. supposed to be Vegetto en b. is this allowed?
I mean, I think Vegeta is pretty badass at times but the poster made it clear that it was about the fusion of him and Goku.

*EDIT: I have updated the images for Oscar from Rose of Versailles*

Okay, not only am I going to vote for Simon, I'm going to write up my own nomination, because I freakin' feel like it. (And I'm going to change the Type he is just a bit).

Re-nominating:
Simon, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann pic #1 pic #2 pic #3
Type of Cool: General Cool and Bad-Ass
Why He's Cool: So, how about those levels of Bad-Ass Simon reaches? Starting from the beginning up until the last episode, Simon keeps on putting his earlier achievements to shame (with episode 11 being the key point where he truly finds his inner strength and courage). I won't list them, in order to avoid spoilers, but let's just say that the beginning of the series starts in an underground cavern where Lagann is discovered, and the ending of the series ends up amongst the stars fighting on a scale larger than universes (literally and figuratively speaking)... and Simon was a major contributor to all of the battles fought.

But as for Simon being a General Cool type? I envision Simon as a simple man with simple desires. I think he would have been happiest as a family man surrounded by those he loved. His decisions to follow a path of greatness were done to ensure a future for everyone around him rather than any true desire for the power contained within him. His motivation stemmed from a desire to become the type of man Kamina and Nia knew he was deep down. He is admirable for drilling through any wall that stood in his path, for beating down every oppressor that told him he couldn't - most importantly his own self-doubt. And with this power, this steady determination, he became the vehicle to bring Kamina's and Nia's dreams to realization and bring humanity to a glorious age of freedom.

----------------------------------------

Additional justification (Original Entire Argument):

Get ready for an epic-length entry, because this is going to be one. First, let's clear up the misinterpretation that Kamina is all the godly and manly hero of the story while Simon is just the "little bro" character. If anything, it would be the reverse where Simon is the godly and manly hero and Kamina is the "big bro" (since TTGL is the story of Simon, as revealed by the narrator), but that isn't true either. The truth is that it is due to one other's influence that each reached the greatness that he achieved during the course of the series.

I liken Kamina to fire: burning, flaring, running wild at the opportunity. However, a majority of his talk during the series is just him blowing a lot of hot air. He is just naturally loud and boisterous, someone whose enthusiasm is infectious and can easily rile up a bunch of people; he is not, however, godly or impenetrable. As revealed during the course of the series, he did have fears and doubts in himself (refusing to leave with his dad when he was a kid; putting on a show for Simon during the cave-in but actually being terrified as revealed by Yoko; freezing up after seeing the skeleton during his first time in Gurren), and were it not for Simon he wouldn't have been able to find the courage to get beyond his fears. He would act the part of the "big bro", of the "crazy leader", in order to keep Simon's spirits high, and would back down and trust Simon at Simon's request. "Believe in me, who believes in you." It is because he believed in Simon that Kamina reached the heights he achieved.

I liken Simon to a dormant volcano: sturdy, reliable, with a hidden inner power. He is the type of guy that whose presence Kamina (and eventually everyone else) depended upon. And Kamina was able to recognize his hidden inner strength. Simon's main issue was his lack of self-confidence initially. Regardless, Kamina always put his faith in Simon, and Simon always came through in the end. And it was through Kamina's (and Nia's) words and actions that he was finally able to break out of his shell and reach the levels of Bad-Ass shown in the later part of the series. And he returned the favor later to both of them by becoming the vehicle to carry forth their dreams (I'll explain this later).

So, overall, Simon was the foundation upon which the hopes and dreams of the future were built upon, and Kamina was the blaze of determination that lit the fires within everyone's soul. And they couldn't have become those symbols, couldn't have been such an inspiration, couldn't have reached their peaks without each other. If anything, Gurren Lagann shows us that "no man is an island entire of itself."

But how about those levels of Bad-Ass Simon reaches? Starting from the beginning up until the last episode, Simon keeps on putting his earlier achievements to shame (with episode 11 being the key point where he truly finds his inner strength and courage). I won't list them, in order to avoid spoilers, but let's just say that the beginning of the series starts in an underground cavern where Lagann is discovered, and the ending of the series ends up amongst the stars fighting on a scale larger than universes (literally and figuratively speaking)... and Simon was a major contributor to all of the battles fought.

But as for Simon being a General Cool type? Well, let's see. I envision Simon as a simple man with simple desires. I think he would have been happiest as a family man surrounded by those he loved. His decisions to follow a path of greatness were more due to ensuring a future for everyone around him (and to actually be with them) than any true desire for the power contained within him. It was Kamina's dream to reach the stars, and Simon followed him on his quest and then later became the vehicle in order for humanity to reach the stars and beyond. It was humanity that wished to not be oppressed from achieving their dreams, and it was Simon who defeated those oppressors. It was his followers that idolized him that he became a leader for during a time of peace, which wasn't as successful an endeavor (and which he later realized that he had to stay true to himself in order to be successful - he could be the warrior, but he couldn't play the part of the politician). And it was Nia (as revealed in the movie Lagann-hen) who dreamed of covering the world in flowers, and Simon became the vehicle in order for this to be accomplished (as revealed in the movie) - if you want to argue against me for using this example since it happened in the movies, which were reinterpretations of the series, then you may do so; however, I still consider it canon and I believe it shows an additional insight of two key characters.

I think the biggest argument against Simon for being a cool character would be his decision at the end of the series. I've heard a few people call him cowardly for following the path he chose. I strongly disagree. How Kamina and Simon exited the stage may be completely different, but it's representative of their personalities, desires, and how I symbolized them earlier (fire and rock). But that does not make Simon a coward. I think part of it was done out of necessity and part of it due to how he truly wished to live his life: simply, peacefully, and helping others along the way.

As for it being a necessity, it was shown at the end of the series that he had extreme power, power that the antagonists felt would lead a path towards destruction. Gimmy even asks as to why Simon wouldn't just give himself a happy ending? He could ensure it. But Simon would not allow himself to abuse his power, and instead popped a cork on his inner volcano and contained it for the rest of his life (which had a visual effect on him later on with his spiral eye, similar to what happened with the Spiral King). I believe that part of him lived a life of obscurity in order to make certain that such power as reached during his peak would not occur again. He did it to protect others. And I think entrusting the future of humanity to the next generation (and trusting that they'll not screw up all of his hard work), shows a level of integrity and wisdom to the character of Simon. I really admired him at the end.

And as for him wanting that life, I truly believe that Simon was a simple man of simple desires. Living the life of a nomad reflects back to a time when he was happiest: traveling on the road with his family. It also gives him the opportunity to carry out Nia's dream and to help those humans who choose to live life on earth rather than amongst the stars.

Anyways, to summarize everything, I feel that Simon is one of the coolest, most awesome characters to come across in anime. It was his presence and his actions that allowed Kamina to become the the Bad-Ass he became; he breaks out of his own shell and realizes his own self-confidence and power, which allows him to become his own epic Bad-Ass; he often sacrifices his own wishes and comforts in order ensure the happiness and future of others; and, not only does he know when to give it his all, but at the end shows that he knows when to back down and trust others to continue his journey.

"I'm Simon. Dai-Gurren Birgade's Leader, Simon the Digger. If you become a wall that stands in our way, I'll tear open a hole and break through every time! That is... my drill!"
