As requested by Dorcas_Aurelia and classicalzawa, I've changed the Count's category to "General Cool". No-one has argued against them (other than myself) so I must assume people accept their interpretation.
I'm happy to go along just so long as he's in the running. |

Jin, Samurai Champloo pic#1 pic#2 Type of Cool: Bad-Ass (Silent & Deadly Type) Why he's Cool: When Jin reaches for his sword, you know -- just KNOW -- that he's sized up his probable opponent(s) and that the only question is how many moves will be required to take him/them down. With Jin, the only real question is just who, exactly, is going to pay for his next meal..... If this nomination passes, then I request that Jin NOT be paired off against Mugen in the early rounds. Damn, school did get delayed two hours and it still wasn't enough time for me to get past page 2
 Will be a few more hours yet on the first update and my own block of nominations. (I have a list and am checking it twice and still see some painfully obvious choices that, shockingly, haven't been nominated yet.)
And really, what's up with these out-of-focus pics (I'm mostly referring to one person here, although there are multiple offenders) and people using manga or fan art pics? I'll admit I didn't make that clear up front, so I'll say now: provided pics must be from the anime version of the content, not the manga.
And this is a very good point. We have certifiable psychopaths nominated who have, just through the first two pages, received multiple votes. If we start applying morality or PC values in this tournament, where do we stop? nbahn: We won't have any trouble filling up 64 candidates (especially not on the Bad-Ass side!), so I'll count your Vote Against votes once I get up to that post. We have 46 nominations just through the first two pages. (Well, actually 45, since I'm still not counting Nanoha until that Guide write-up gets done properly.) |

A couple of points. 1. "Coolness" is incredibly subjective. I think Reki is ever so cool. Others who have seconded the nomination seem to agree. You may not think she is cool but could you imagine how others might? I, for one, think Erin is way too earnest to be considered cool, but others think otherwise. I'm not going to argue against Erin being included. In the end, the winner will be the person whom the most people agree is pretty damn cool. Why worry about possible marginal nominations? They will lack support if they are truly uncool. 2. I think you have missed the point I was making about the cigarette. It's not smoking that's inherently cool. In fact, I hate cigarettes and smoking. It's the incongruity between angel's wings, haloes and smoking. When was the last time you saw a depiction of an angel smoking? It's not some actor smoking (one expects that); it's an angel smoking and that's what's so cool. |

Nominating:
Porco Rosso (Marco Pagot), Porco Rosso pic Type of Cool: General and Classic Cool Why He's Cool: Porco Rosso was Miyazaki's idea of a cool guy in the mold of Humphrey Bogart. He's cynical, hard-boiled and gruff but he's also a lover and a fighter and it really doesn't matter that his looks aren't the most chiseled. He's an ace pilot and bounty hunter who took to battling Air Pirates after WWI and can fly rings around just any opponent but refuses to shoot down a plane if it means hitting the pilot. He's also no slouch a fist fight either, able to trade punches with a very strong opponent. He may have a gruff exterior and the face of a pig but his skills and strong character can still charm the ladies, including the most sought after woman of the Adriatic, who patiently waits for him. November 11, Darker Than Black pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why He's Cool: As MI6's best agent, he doesn't falter in the face of a worldwide organization pulling the strings of the world's most well-known intelligence agencies, including his own. For the most part, he keeps things to himself, as a lone wolf would, while giving help to those whom he regards as friends, even if very indirectly, and enigmatically. He's well liked by his friends, and perhaps even by some whom he may think of as enemies in the beginning, and middle of the series. As a fact, he even managed to get a Doll (emotionless human) to call him "comrade", for the surprise of every character aware of such an event. Shiki, Kara no Kyoukai pic Type of Cool: Bad-Ass, Psychotic Why She's Cool: Shiki, one who seeks the true meaning in killing people. She despises those who kill just for the sake of killing, despite being a killer herself. Once in action, her skills, determination, and fearlessness are incomparable, and with the help of a supernatural ability called "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" (which gives her the ability to see the inherent mortality of everything, be it alive or not, in the forms of lines, and a single point (the essence of the object)), she faces characters whose skills, and sometimes even bodies, were enhanced for the single task of fighting her. She doesn't care much about her own body, and one would even go as far as to say that she doesn't care much about her own life itself. Lastly, she sets out to kill her loved one's best friend to protect him, despite facing the possibility of being hated by him for the rest of her life. If Shiki makes it into the video part she's set to get to the semi-finals; I dare say. And, if you feel like you can write a better guide, go ahead, as I've never re-watched the movies and I began watching this when the first movie came out, so it's just natural I'd forget a few too many facts. Well, then, if you thought smoking is immoral let's see what you have to say about Shiki.

A wondering priest and a superb gunman, one of the most skilled people with a pistol out there, bears quite an impressive gun of a tremendous size and atypical shape as a sign of his sins. A bit of a romantic hero. On the one hand, he is commited to saving life of little orphans he takes care of, on the other, he does nto hesitate to kill without mercy. I'm thinking of nominating Dr. Ozaki from Shiki, but as the show has not ended yet, I wodner whether there is some more coolness coming up, or a flop. Hard to nminate a character we have not yet see the whole development so far... Another one on my mind is Real from Ergo Proxy, but I cant think of anything sensible for the write up, it's been way too long since I last saw the series... Lol for egoist's photo of November 11

And it's not irrelevant. He's naked on enemy territory, and look at how he keeps his cool. Last tournament Key let us change a character's entry guide later on. I'll definitely do Toshio by Wednesday if nobody does. |

And now that I've (finally!) caught up, I would like to say something positive (for a change!) in this thread: I am quite pleased to see a number of new names getting involved so far. Keep it up!

I didn't support some of the top pics because, honestly, they don't need it. The first of a wave of new nominations over the course of the evening: Allen Schezar, Escaflowne franchise pic Type of Cool: General Cool Why He's Cool: In either version of the story the dashing Allen Schezar is a top-rate Guymelef (i.e. mecha) pilot who prides himself on his manners and sense of duty and always operates with an enticing sense of elegance and grace. In the TV series he is the most elite of the Knights of Caeli protecting the kingdom of Asturia, while in the movie version he is a rebel leader. He easily commands the respect, admiration, and love of those who don't see him as a rival. Alucard, Hellsing franchise pic Type of Cool: Bad-Ass Why He's Cool: Pure vampires in anime simply don't come cooler or more Bad-Ass than Alucard. He revels in fighting difficult opponents but has both the skill and immense power to put down almost anyone he gets serious about. His flashy threads, laid-back attitude, smarmy behavior towards lesser foes, and sense of style all contribute to his overall aura of cool. Revy, Black Lagoon pic Type of Cool: Bad-Ass Why She's Cool: Revy comes from the school of shoot first and never worry about the questions. An ace gunwoman, she is one of the toughest and most capable combatants in a setting rife with bad-ass individuals. She constantly itches for a good fight and rarely gets flustered or beaten. Honoka, The Third: The Girl With The Blue Eye pic Type of Cool: Either Why She's Cool: Within her setting, Honoka is arguably the most fearsome human warrior, with skill with a katana and chi manipulation so great that she is widely (and respectfully) known as Sword Dancer. She is quietly confident and monstrously strong and, when she sets her mind to it, can be so intimidating with just her glare that she can even give a sentient AI pause. Despite her abilities, though, she maintains a generally relaxed, cheery, and even poetic personality which naturally draws people towards her. Most in the setting who know her either respect, love, or want to emulate her. |

The first master list is now up on the OP, updated through my last post. We have 78 candidates so far, although three are in danger of falling off. Not bad for a little more than two days! I still have about a dozen more nominations to toss out, too.
The split is more even than I expected, too: 39-36 on Bad-Ass vs. General Cool, with three that could go either way. Top vote-getter so far, BTW, is Spike Spiegel. I doubt that's a big surprise to anyone. |

Nominating the badass of this year:
Toshio Ozaki, Shiki pic Type: Badass Doctor Reasoning: Intent on finding the cause behind the "epidemic" that is plaguing the village, the good doctor pursues a rational course of action until there is no other option, except admitting that the cause of this are vampires. After which, he takes advantage of the fact that his wife was attacked, and arises as a shiki... and proceeds to experiment on her. All in the name of science. Later, he exposes the vampires to the villagers... and generally behaves like an ice-cold badass. Don't worry, he will continue being a badass... what he already did makes him a worthy competitor. Oh and Key - sorry, I forgot them, will be writing justifications soon. |
