On the Wikipedia article for K-ON it says that the demographic show is Seinen. Apparently that's for young adult males. Is that a mistake, because I've heard that information on Wikipedia can be false. It's seems like a pretty girly/kiddy show from the previews,so why would it appeal to people so old? Was that the intention of the creators, or did it just catch on with that group of people? The show looks pretty tame, but if it truly is for adults, is there any content that would not be suitable for me? (I am 14)

Well I think may be targeted towards what you said, K-ON! generally has the theme of moe which has the purpose of activating the want to protect in male adults.

But I will also add that there is absolutly nothing that would prevent a 14 year old from enjoying it. There is not really any questionable themes, well one of the girls apparently had her underwear flashed to a lot of people, but the animators cut it from view and had a discretion shot.

Go ahead watch it, I would let my 9 year old brother watch it if he could read well enough or it was dubbed in english.

K-ON is seinan in the same way that Azumanga Daioh is. To a Western audience, it seems very strange but IIRC they both aired quite late at night in Japan.

That said, their Western ratings would probably be PG/PG-13 because there's nothing in their content that would exclude a younger audience.

This is a classic misconception, caused by the fact that: Japanese older males and US older males can have dramatically different tastes.

Anyways, it doesn't always make sense to conflate "intended audience" for "audience it'd have appropriate content for." Like, Adult Contemporary music may be marketed towards adults, but it's not like it's full of lyrics about smoking blunts and f***ing ho's.

Ironically, the Yen Press release of K-On is self-rated OT (Older Teen) 16+, for L S (Language, Sexual Situations). Probably because in certain Southern and Midwestern countries, the slightest hint of lesbianism is extraordinarily offensive to parents. And Sayako-sensei uses some cuss words.

By the way, it has been dubbed in English now. Just need to wait for Bandai to release it.
