That's pretty close to Furuya's reasons for going into the manga industry rather than the other subjects he had been involved in beforehand, like fine art, dance, and being an art teacher. It's great that someone with so much variety delved into comics. I just hope people don't pass over this because they might find it to be some Bakuman clone from glancing at the cover. His work is amazing (and personally I can't wait for Vertical's Litchi Hikari Club release next year). |

I picked up the first volume of Genkaku Picasso. It's a pretty enjoyable series, I like how the art style plays into the story, and the psychological aspect is pretty interesting. Great read!!

I wouldn't be in any great rush if I were you. I had high hopes for it but it's kind of...obvious and shallow. It isn't terrible or anything - better than most Jump titles I've read - but of the works covered in this week's RTO, 7 Billion Needles and Saturn Apartments are much, much better (especially the latter). |

I've been off on on 7 Billion Needles until the second volume to see if still stays good. Looks like I'll be picking them up tonight.
As a side note, as much as I appreciate the 50s pulp sci-fi covers, I like some of the French version covers (which I assume are also the original covers) better |

Totally reading you dude! Admittedly I never did pick up Sugar Sugar Rune like you so enthusiastically suggested for so long ... yet this week in particular has been one of my favorites in terms of hopefully turning me on to some new titles ... I see three I might pick up here.
Keep on rockin! We'll keep on reading. But writing? I gotta leave that to the pros. Like Vashfanatic and Moomintroll. *ducks* |

That seems to be the case with most graphic novel version of novels. That's why I don't like it when a novel gets a graphic novel version-it's too light, unsatisfying and you're really just getting an abridged version. I'd rather have the entire story intact.
It's funny you should mention that, that's exactly how I feel about the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. They basically rip from The Lord of the Rings (which is a much better work in my humble opinion) and other works, but they are good enough. Especially the first book, The Sword of Shannara. That was his best. None of the manga reviewed here interest me.  Oh well, I still have some older series to catch up on.

It's the art that intrigues me, though, not the story. The other two interest me... somewhat (I have a lot on my plate) but the promise of unique art caught my attention. |

There is some nice art in there (whenever the protagonist goes diving around in someone's subconscious) but it's sandwiched between a lot of fairly generic art that fills up the rest of the book. Still, it is worth trying* - it's readable enough and even at its worst, it doesn't look terrible - just don't be too disappointed if you find it falls quite a long way short of the other Furuya works that have been released in English. [*: Well, I think so - others may not agree...] |

Duuuuuude, I didn't realize "I AM HERE!" was released state-side. Koko ni Iru yo! was such a sweet manga till the end. I just wanted to take the Hikage home, she's so adorable. X)
This is why I hate Del Rey's website. They don't list the manga they have. Navigating their site is a nightmare. Sometimes I search for a manga I know the publish (as in I have a copy with their logo) and their search bar comes up with no results no matter how I type the title/author. And this is why I <3 Yen Press's site. They list all the manga they have, all the ones they release each month and future months. Carlo, as for the RTO thing, and for the manga you review overall (and some of the stuff Liann did too), could you perhaps make a list of what's been reviewed? I've always wanted to submit something but I never had the time to go and check every RTO to make sure it hasn't been done yet. Along with cross check to make sure *you* haven't done it yet either. Something like a running alphabetical list that you can always add more to somewhere. Like a sticky on the forum. If that existed, I feel like more people would participate (at least I would!). |

Whatever its shortcomings, I'll be picking up Genkaku Picasso in the vain hope that maybe, if it sells well enough, Viz will release Palepoli in full. It's practically criminal that it hasn't already.

Wow, so many great titles to check out! And, as always, I wish I had a lot more money than I do
And I read and respond in the forum, I just don't have anything I feel a great burning need to review, at least not here (I do write reviews for another site but those are books that are sent to me so I don't have to actually pick anything  ).

I know I'm responding late, but I love this column, look forward to it every other week, and have been meaning to send in a review! I think I need a little self-confidence boost, but knowing that internet fame and fortune coul be mine is a great motivator!
As for this edition: why am I not surprised that the title with the lowest score was published by Tokyopop? Come on, TP! You *can* publish great manga! You brought Fruits Basket, Paradise Kiss and Planetes to the United States! Planetes! With color pages and...actually, if you could just re-release Planetes instead of licensing new rubbish, I'll be happy! 
The other titles look so good, especiallty Genkaku Picasso. Well, execept for Daniel X. I took it out of the library a couple of weeks.ago and I still haven't read it. Not sure why I took it out to begin with...I really hope my library gets a hold of Genkaku Picasso and I am Here! |
