I'm happy that they are turning Valerian and Laureline into an animated show but... there's not much of Mezières distinctive style in the human character designs. They look more like characters from a western action cartoon with some anime features added. On the other hand that trailer was in a rather small window so it's difficult to judge. Full screen it will probably look more animeish.
Oh and they better do something about the page and the character drawings on it. Everything gives off an aura of amateur design. |

I haven't read the comics, but when the anime gets released and hopefully becomes popular they better make a soft toy version of the Shingouz becuase they're cute, and i want one! Even if they are capitalist and greedy...looks like it has potential, hoping for some cool alien scene-scapes and characters.

I agree with Gauss on this one : the animated adaptation lacks Mezières's splendid style for depicting strange alien civilizations, and looks too much like any other european or US cartoon trying to mimick 'anime' drawning style to appeal to younger audience. What a pity. The original comics always seemed vibrant and full of life with plenty of little details, while this cartoon, in comparaison, looks barren and lifeless.

What I miss aside from the style of Meziers, is the locales he drew. The reason Valerian and Laureline is so exciting(to me), is the places they go to. In the trailer they seem to be stuck in that space station. The alien drawings screams "generic anime alien #n. The colour pallete seemed to be "streamlined sci-fi anime". The actual books screamed "step by step colour key"
(colour keys are a couple of colour charts depicting the colours they should use in a film/series) And frankly, all they have to do is follow what the comic book dictates colorwise, localewise and character design wise.Er, is there also any reason behind Laureline's shorter hair? And she doesn't look as spunky and independent as in the book. Although on a more positive note they did the Shingouz justice. And Valerian did look like himself. |

For starters, I absolutely love Valerian (well, Laureline). The best comic ever.
I have really hard time swallowing that trailer, but I'm content on just waiting for it and seeing how it turns out. The character designs really are a bit too much different from those in the original comics, though the cuteified Shinguzi was funnily appropiate. Not that worried about the central station playing a big role in the plot (well, the trailer at least) - at least in the Ambassador of Shadows it is clearly seen how much variety and different locales that place can have... |

I think the chara art is pretty lacklustre as well. Here's art from the original material. Laureline is a babe in the original, while the anime version, she just looks like a babe.
Mind you we may see it sans commercials on Australian TV if it is a French/Japanese anime production. A lot of that stuff gets dubbed into English and shown on Canadian TV. Widya Santoso |

Well, that picture doesn't show much. This page has some better samples of lovely Laureline (mind, a few tasteful nudes in case there are some prudes or perverts out there).
