Unstoppable Backs .Anime for DNS Registration Amid $1B Japan Initiative

Kintsugi, recently selected for Japan's $1 billion DigiDen initiative, becomes the first anime and manga platform to establish a Web3-centric, DNS-enabled domain in anticipation of next year's ICANN gTLD initiative.

San Francisco, CA, USA — 18th June 2024 9am PT — Unstoppable Domains, the largest Web3 domain player and user-owned digital identity, and Kintsugi Global, Inc., a Japan-based leading provider of Web3 services and solutions, today announced plans to register for the first DNS-enabled Web3 domains focused on anime and manga through an application with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This application targets a legacy Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD), a crucial step for securing widely recognized domain extensions such as .com and .net.

The application revolves around the “.anime” and “.manga” Web3 domains introduced by Kintsugi and Unstoppable last year alongside the animedomains.com digital marketplace. The submission is timed to align with ICANN's highly anticipated six-year registration program scheduled for next year.

Kintsugi Global has now become a supporter of the Vision for a Digital Garden City Nation (“DigiDen”) promoted by the Japanese Government. As part of the initiative, Kintsugi will launch an anime and manga platform that will empower creators by enabling blockchain-based content distribution and control over their intellectual property while fostering Web3 communities and fan engagement through digital collectibles. This initiative underscores the strategic alignment of Kintsugi's platform with the .anime and .manga domains, reinforcing their pivotal role in fostering creative ownership and community engagement.

If the application is successful, the .anime and .manga domains will join the ranks of iconic ICANN-registered top-level domains like .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and more. Their introduction will enhance digital branding strategies and provide distinct online identities tailored specifically to the anime and manga communities.

“Through our joining application with Kintsugi for ICANN registration of the .anime and .manga Web3 domains, we aim to open up new opportunities for digital identities centered around the anime and manga communities,”commented Sandy Carter, COO of Unstoppable Domains. “If approved, these domains will provide invaluable digital real estate, enhancing the branding potential of creators and fan engagement.”

The registration is part of Unstoppable Domain's strategy to integrate Web3 domains into the legacy Domain Name System by registering their Web2 equivalents, or “twins”, with ICANN. Initially focused on a curated selection of Web3 domains, Unstoppable plans to expand its offerings, offering companies an integrated naming solution at a reduced cost ahead of the next ICANN round.
