Chad Storm wins first Fullmetal Alchemist TCG World Championship
CHAROTTE, NC (August 15, 2006) - The first annual Fullmetal Alchemist TCG World Championship concluded Sunday, Aug. 13, at Gen Con So Cal, with Chad Storm of Columbus, Ind., defeating fellow Indianan Greg Durant for the grand prize.
For his efforts, Storm received a complete set of every FMA TCG card ever produced, an FMA TCG World Championship backpack, an FMA TCG World Championship polo shirt, a trophy, a 30 GB iPod, a $50 iTunes gift certificate, a $100 Best Buy gift certificate, an Xbox 360, two playsets of The Elric Brothers, The Only Family They've Got promo card (marked as "World Champion"), and he qualifies for the 2007 FMA TCG World Championship.
Storm went 6-1 in the seven-round Swiss qualifier on Saturday, Aug. 12, only losing his final game, with his Lust hand-control deck. He went into the top 16 as the #3 seed, defeating Jeff Tran (#14), Lowell Lunn (#6), and Justin Beal (#15) to make the finals. Durant, who rode his Scar deck to a 5-2 finish in the qualifying rounds, entered the top 16 as the #5 seed and defeated David Alva (#12), Steven McNamara (#13), and Ricardo Lopez (#1) to reach the finals.
All told, after Sensei's Trials, Regional tournaments, and qualifiers on the first two days of Gen Con Indy, there were 80 participants in Saturday's main event. While many players were within driving distance, finalists came from as far away as Arizona, California, Florida, and Quebec to try and become the first Fullmetal Alchemist TCG World Champion.
"My opponents at Worlds were all good and sporting opponents," Storm said on the FMA TCG forums the day after his victory. "Every one of them was a pleasant experience, both to play against and talk with. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again next year."
Pictures from the event will be posted on FMA-tcg.com later this week. Congratulations to Chad, Greg, and all the finalists and good luck next year!
