Crunchyroll to Stream Boogiepop and Others, Kemono Friends 2, Meiji Tokyo Renka, An Angel Flew Down to Me, Mini Toji Anime

Crunchyroll announced on Thursday that it will stream the Boogiepop and Others, Meiji Tokyo Renka, WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me, Kemono Friends 2, and Katana Maidens ~ Mini Toji anime as they air in Japan this winter.

Boogiepop and Others will debut on January 4 at 9:00 a.m. EST. The stream will be available worldwide outside of Asia and French-, German-, and Russian-speaking territories.

Shingo Natsume (One-Punch Man, Space Dandy both seasons, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.) is directing the new anime at Madhouse. Tomohiro Suzuki (One-Punch Man, Tiger & Bunny, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.) is writing and supervising the series scripts, and Hidehiko Sawada (key animator for One-Punch Man, Redline) is designing the characters. The musician Kensuke Ushio (A Silent Voice, Devilman Crybaby, Liz and the Blue Bird) is composing the music.

Seven Seas Entertainment published the light novel in English, and is reprinting the novels along with new volumes. The company describes the story:

There is an urban legend that children tell one another about a shinigami that can release people from the pain they may be suffering. This "Angel of Death" has a name: Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real.

When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. But Nagi Kirima knows better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop, or something more sinister...?

Meiji Tokyo Renka will premiere on January 9 at 12:00 p.m. EST. The stream will be available worldwide outside of Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, France (and New Caledonia), and Germany.

Akitarō Daichi (Kamisama Kiss, Ninja Girl & Samurai Master) is directing the television anime at TMS Entertainment, and Junko Yamanaka (Kamisama Kiss, Ninja Girl & Samurai Master) is serving as both character designer and chief animation director. The anime will feature three ending theme songs: "Hoshikuzu no Yomibito" by KENN and Daisuke Namikawa, "Mellow na Yoru ni Odorimashō" by Shinnosuke Tachibana and Nobuhiko Okamoto, and "Yoiya Yoiya" by Kousuke Toriumi and Jun Fukuyama.

The anime is based on Broccoli's Meiji Tokyo Renka visual novel romance franchise. Crunchyroll describes the story:

On the night of a crimson full moon, high school girl Ayazuki Mei, lured by the magic of mysterious magician Charlie, enters into a box. When she awakens, she's in Tokyo during the Meiji Period!

The lost and confused Mei is aided by Mori Ougai and Hishida Syunso, who take her in their carriage to the Rokumeikan, a lavish ballroom full of powerful high officials. where she meets historic figures such as Izumi Kyoka, Kawakami Otojiro, Koizumi Yakumo, and Fujita Goro.

In this world, during the "Misty Hour" between sundown and sunup, "mononoke" appear. Those who can see them are called "Tamayori," and Mei herself possesses this power. As she navigates an unfamiliar life, romance begins to bloom between Mei and these men -- and the power of the tamayori will only strengthen their bonds.

Mei's chance to return to her own time will come during the full moon one month later. Will she choose modern day life, or...?

In the slightly wondrous Meiji-era Tokyo, a love story across time begins to blossom.

WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me (Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!) will premiere on January 8 at 9:00 a.m. EST worldwide outside of Asia.

The anime is reuniting staff members who worked together on the New Game! anime. Daisuke Hiramaki (episode director for Yuruyuri San Hai!, Shirobako, New Game!!) is directing the series at Doga Kobo (Tada Never Falls in Love, Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun). Hiromi Nakagawa (chief animation director for Himouto! Umaru-chan, Rewrite) is designing the characters, and Yuka Yamada (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, My Sweet Tyrant) is in charge of series composition.

The four-panel comedy manga's story centers on Miyako Hoshino, a shy college student and otaku. Miyako's younger sister Hinata, who is a fifth grader, has a classmate and friend named Hana. When they meet, Miyako falls for Hana at first sight.

Kemono Friends 2 will premiere on January 14 at 2:35 p.m. EST worldwide outside of Asia.

Ryuichi Kimura (Aikatsu!) is directing the anime at Tomason. Takuya Masumoto is writing and supervising the series' scripts. Hideo Taniguchi (Folktales from Japan) is the CG director. Nobuyuki Abe returns as the sound director. Yasuyuki Konno is credited for sound effects. Akiyuki Tateyama returns as the music composer. Shinnosuke Numata is credited as animation producer.

The new season's story begins with Serval and Caracal finding a "human" child in the forest. As they travel with the child, they meet new Friends, uncover the secrets of Japari Park, and become involved in an event that will "shake the earth."

Katana Friends ~ Mini Toji will debut on January 5 at 2:00 p.m. EST worldwide outside of Asia.

Yuu Nobuta (High School Fleet) is directing the new anime at project No.9 (Angel's 3Piece, Pastel Memories, Momokyun Sword), and Meme Meme's Aoi Akashiro (Classroom of the Elite, Fuuka, Killing Bites) is in charge of the series scripts. Hiromi Ogata (Magic Kaito 1412) is serving as character designer and chief animation director.

The anime features mini versions of the characters from the previous Katana Maidens: Toji no Miko television anime and Toji no Miko: Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi smartphone game.

Studio Gokumi's original 24-episode television anime project Katana Maidens: Toji no Miko (The Shrine Maiden Swordwielders) premiered in January 2018. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and Funimation streamed an English dub.
