Spider-Man Co-Creator Steve Ditko Passes Away at 90

American comic artist also created Doctor Strange, Squirrel Girl, other iconic characters

American comic artist Steve Ditko passed away on June 29. He was 90 years old.

Born in 1927, Ditko is perhaps best known as the co-creator of the spider-Man comic character, who eventually became one of Marvel Comics' most recognizable and iconic characters. He also created the similarly iconic Doctor Strange character. Other characters he has created include Squirrel Girl, Hawk and Dove, Blue Beetle, and The Question.

In a statement on Saturday, Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley said that Ditko's "legacy will never be forgotten." Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski said, "It's impossible to put into words the impact that Steve Ditko had not just on comics, but on modern pop culture. With ink and imagination, he thrilled readers with amazing and awe-inspiring adventures. Ditko didn't just create characters – he built worlds."

The Spider-Man character inspired the 1970 Spider-Man manga by Kazumasa Hirai, Kōsei Ono, and Ryōichi Ikegami, and the 1978 Toei tokusatsu television series, notable for its inclusion of a giant robot that the titular web-slinger piloted. Characters that Ditko created, including spider-Man and Doctor Strange, appear in the Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers anime series.
