VAIO, Toei, and Craftar announced a new venture named VR Cinema Consortium (VRCC) on Tuesday. The new consortium aims to screen VR content in cinemas, with the first screenings showing three 3D CG shorts. The first short is based on the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise and is titled "evangelion: Another Impact." The second short is based on the Mr. Osomatsu franchise and is titled "Osomatsu-san VR." The third short is an original work, titled "Natsu o Yarinaosu" (Redo the Summer). The Evangelion short is based on the "Evangelion: Another Impact (Confidential)" short shown in the 2015 Japan Animator Expo collection of shorts.
All three shorts will begin preview screenings at the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater on July 2, and is planned to screen for a month. Two additional shorts titled "Ju-on VR" (by original Ju-on director and creator Takashi Shimizu) and "Kamen Rider VR" are also planned, as well as concerts and feature-length films.
VAIO is providing the hardware, and develop the software systems and network necessary for the joint venture's VR content. Toei is distributing the content to participating theaters. Craftar is animating and producing the content.
