Musical is new adaptation of 2012 Korean stage musical, based on Yarō Abe's culinary manga

Stage performance companies Consept and Show-Biz revealed last week that they will launch a new stage musical adaptation of the South Korean stage musical based on Shinya Shokudō (The Midnight Diner or La Cantine de Minuit) manga. The musical will run at the Theater Sun Mall in Tokyo from October 26 to November 11. Kōichi Ogita is directing the musical, while Ako Takahashi is translating and adapting the original Korean script to Japanese. Natsuko Kinoshita is choreographing the production.

The cast includes:

The new musical adapts a 2012 South Korean stage musical based on the original manga. Jeong Young wrote the original script and lyrics for the musical while Kaim Haesung composed the music. The musical had an earlier Japanese adaptation in 2014.

Yarō Abe's Shinya Shokudō manga centers on the proprietor of a small, mysterious cafeteria in Shinjuku and his customers. The cafeteria opens at midnight to fix customers any dish they request. The popular story has inspired multiple live-action television series and films and was nominated for the bookseller-selected Manga Taishō ("Cartoon Grand Prize") in 2009. The story was nominated for Angoulême's Best Comic Award and Audience Award earlier this year.

Abe launched the manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine in 2006. Shogakukan published the manga's 19th compiled book volume last November, and will publish the 20th volume on June 29.
