Indonesian publisher Penerbit Haru announced on Wednesday that it has licensed Honobu Yonezawa's Credit Roll of the Fool (Gusha no Endroll) novel, the sequel book of Yonezawa's Hyōka mystery novel. The company's Instagram account asked readers to vote on one of two covers for the book.
The second book's story begins with preparations for the school's cultural festival, and Class 2-F's intent to make an independent student film with a murder mystery story. However, because the film's scriptwriter became seriously ill, there is no ending, and the murderer in the story remains a mystery. Hōtarō plays the observer to members of the film's production that give their own theories as to the identity of the murderer, and the Classic Literature Club members also come up with their own theories. Now Hōtarō has to make an ending that uses all the plot and thematic elements of the story, and satisfy everyone. The story is portrayed in episodes 8-11 of the anime.
Yonezawa's Kotenbu (Classic Literature Club) novel series began with Hyōka, the first novel, in 2001. The Gusha no Endroll novel then followed in 2002, Kudryavka no Junban in 2005, Toomawari Suru Hiyoko in 2007, Futari no Kyori no Gaisan in 2010, and Imasara Tsubasa o Iwaretemo in November 2016. Penerbit Haru released the Hyōka novel last December.
Kyoto Animation adapted some of the stories in the series into a 22-episode television anime series in 2012. The anime's character designs by Futoshi Nishiya served as the basis for the character designs in Task Ohna's manga, which launched in Kadokawa's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine in January 2011. Kadokawa published the manga's 11th compiled book volume last October.
A live-action film adaptation starring Kento Yamazaki and Alice Hirose opened in Japan last November.
