posted on by Karen Ressler
Video streaming service HIDIVE added the first episode of the Lone Wolf and Cub live-action series on Wednesday. A new episode will debut every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
The 78-episode series ran from 1973-1976. Media Blasters previously licensed the series and released the first 36 episodes in North America in 2009.
First Comics premiered Kazuo Koike's classic Lone Wolf and Cub manga in English in May 1987. The series was one of the first manga published in North America, and the first manga to be released in North America on a monthly schedule. Dark Horse began releasing the series in 2000 as the first manga series to be published in North America straight to graphic novels that corresponded with the Japanese releases. In 2013, Dark Horse began releasing the series in omnibus format. Dark Horses' Lone Wolf and Cub editions have around 1.3 million copies in print.
In addition to the live-action series, the manga also inspired six feature movies starring Tomisaburō Wakayama and four stage plays. AnimEigo licensed the Japanese 1972 live-action film version and its five sequels. Dark Horse Comics has also released the New Lone Wolf & Cub sequel manga and the Western comic series Lone Wolf 2100.
The series also has an English-language film in the works.
