New Shonen Ashibe Manga About Main Characters in High School Launches in July
posted on by Karen Ressler
This year's August issue of Futabasha's Monthly Action magazine announced on Saturday that a new Shōnen Ashibe manga series will launch in the next issue on July 25. Original creator Hiromi Morishita is writing the story and Shōhei, an artist known for boys-love manga, will provide the art. Morishita posted a preview image on Twitter.
The new manga, titled Seishōnen Ashibe, follows Ashibe and Sugao as first-year high school students. In the original series, they are in their second year of elementary school.
Morishita serialized the original manga in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine from 1988 to 1994. The story follows the daily life of the baby spotted seal Goma-chan and its owner, schoolboy Ashibe Ashiya. The series spawned a manga sequel named ComaGoma in Weekly Young Jump from 2000 to 2004.
The manga inspired a 1991 television anime series and a second 1992-1993 television anime series. Most recently, the manga inspired the ongoing Shōnen Ashibe GO! GO! Goma-chan anime, which premiered in April 2016 and is now in its second season. The new anime in turn inspired a manga adaptation from Morishita and Junko Ogino. Crunchyroll is streaming the new anime and releasing the manga adaptation on its website.
