Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) announced on Friday that it is organizing the U.S. Preliminary for the World Cosplay Summit (WCS). The event will take place during the masquerade at Anime Expo on July 2.
SPJA CEO Mark Manansala commented that the organization is "looking forward to partnering with other events across the nation to hold the regional qualifiers for WCS in the future."
The contest is open to U.S. citizens over the age of 18, though entries must be teams of two people. The winner will represent the United States at the Cosplay Championship at WCS 2017 in Nagoya from July 29 to August 6. The World Cosplay Summit launched in 2003 with four participating countries and has since expanded to 30 countries and regions.
SPJA is the California-based non-profit organization behind Anime Expo. The Los Angeles-based convention will run from July 1 to July 4 this year.
