Okada's Sundome, Very Private Lesson Manga Get New Live-Action Films This Year

New live-action film adaptations of Kazuto Okada's Sundome and Kyōkasho ni Nai! manga have been green-lit. Both will receive two new films.
The new Sundome films, titled Sundome New and Sundome New 2, star Nagisa Odajima. The first film will screen in a limited engagement on April 22, 25, and 27 at the Shibua HUMAX Cinema in Tokyo. The second film will screen at the same location on April 24, 26, and 28.
The films also star Raimu Ozawa, Eimi Matsushima, Aya Kawasaki, Yūka Ogura, and Ryō Kawai. Kazuhiro Yokoyama (High Kick Angels) is directing the films.
The coming-of-age love story follows the sexual frustrations of the members of the Roman Club, which tries to preserve the virginity of its members through high school.
The first film adapting the manga premiered in 2007. The cast starred Atsushi Ninomiya as Hideo Akeba, Akane Suzuki as Kurumi Sahana, and Kana Tsugihara as Kyōko. The second film opened in March 2015, starring Hiroko Kamata and Rina Toeda. The manga launched in Akita Shoten's Young Champion magazine in 2006, and ended in 2009 with a total of nine compiled volumes, and Yen Press publishes the manga in North America.
The new Kyōkasho ni Nai! films, titled Kyōkasho ni Nai! 3 and Kyōkasho ni Nai! 4, will star former AKB48 member Ayaka Morikawa as Aya Shirakaba, and Ryōma Baba will play Arihiko Tairaku. Both reprise their roles from the previous two films. The films will open in early summer.
The film will also star Anna Hongō, Hitomi Yasueda, Ayaka Hara, and Yuriko Ishihara. Shōta Sasaki, the director of the first two films, will return for this new project.
The romantic comedy manga centers on Aya Shirakaba — the daughter of a Yakuza member — and Arihiko Tairaku, her high school teacher whom she falls in love with and lives together with. The manga follows their school life and their life living together.
The manga ran in Kyōkasho ni Nai! in Young Champion magazine from 1995 to 2002. The first two live-action films opened in Japan last June. It received a direct-to-video film in 1995, an OVA in 1998, and a live-action television series adaptation in South Korea in 2007. Media Blasters released the OVA under the title Very Private Lesson.
Okada ended his Ittsuuu manga in Young Champion magazine last year. Akita Shoten published the seventh and final volume last May. The manga also inspired two live-action film adaptations in August 2014.
