Samurai Gourmet Netflix Series' Trailer Introduces Protagonist

Netflix began streaming a trailer on Thursday for Samurai Gourmet, the live-action series adaptation of Masayuki Kusumi and Shigeru Tsuchiyama's Manga-han Nobushi no Gourmet (Manga Edition Samurai Gourmet) manga. The trailer previews the series' story, introducing Takashi Kasumi and the samurai.
The series will premiere streaming exclusively on Netflix on March 17.
The 12-episode series stars Naoto Takenaka (Patlabor 2: The Movie's Shigeki Arakawa) as Takashi Kasumi, Tetsuji Tamayama (live-action Lupin III's Daisuke Jigen) as the samurai, and Honami Suzuki (Tokyo Love Story's Rika Akana) as Shizuko Kasumi.
The staff of the Kodoku no Gourmet live-action series, another adaptation of a manga written by Kusumi, are returning for Samurai Gourmet. The 10-episode first season of Kodoku no Gourmet premiered in 2012, and the latest fifth season aired in October-December 2015.
Tsuchiyama began the manga based on Kusumi's "Nobushi no Gourmet" essays in 2013 in the Gentosha Plus online magazine. The manga is ongoing and is in its third season. The story follows a 60-year-old retired salaryman who enjoys eating and drinking at restaurants by himself. He rejects the idea of living in excess now that he has free time and money to spare, and instead wants to live the simple and rustic life of a samurai eating food he likes as much as he wants.
JManga previously published Tsuchiyama's Gokudō Meshi manga in 2011 and it inspired a live-action film in 2011. Gokudō Meshi ended in 2012. Tsuchiyama's Kinban Gourmet Bushimeshi! manga also has a live-action series that premiered on January 10.
Kusumi and Jiro Taniguchi first serialized Kodoku no Gourmet from 1994 to 1996 in Fusosha's Monthly Panja magazine (now defunct). Fusosha published the first collected volume in 1997. Kusumi and Fusosha published the manga's second volume in September 2015. The now-defunct online manga site JManga once licensed the manga for North America and published a part of it in English.
