Vertical Comics announced on Friday that it has licensed Makoto Shinkai and Tsubasa Yamaguchi's She and Her Cat (Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko) manga. The company said it plans to release the manga this summer.
Yamaguchi launched the manga in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in February 2016, and ended the series in May. Kodansha published the manga's one compiled volume on August 23.
A four-episode television anime titled She and Her Cat -Everything Flows-, based on Shinkai's original short, aired on the Ultra Super Anime Time programming block last March. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan.
Shinkai (your name., Voices of a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Garden of Words) released his original She and Her Cat five-minute short anime independently in 1999. Shinkai voiced the cat while his wife (then girlfriend) Mika Shinohara voiced the girl. Shinkai produced and animated the short alone, and his longtime collaborator Tenmon composed the music. The short won the grand prize at the 12th DoGA CG Animation Contest in 2000. ADV Films' 2003 DVD release of Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star includes the short.
Both the short and the four-episode series followed the relationship between a young woman and her cat, as told from the cat's point of view.
