Mashin Eiyuden Wataru Director Shuji Iuchi Passes Away at 66

Director, animator, and scriptwriter Shuji Iuchi passed away last Thursday, December 15. He was 66.
Iuchi was best known for directing all the anime in Sunrise's Mashin Eiyūden Wataru mecha franchise, beginning with the 1988 series, until the 1997 series. He had also written novels for the franchise. In addition, he directed such anime as Ginga Tetsudo 999: Kimi wa Senshi no You ni Ikirareru ka!!, Lady Georgie, Love Position - The Legend of Halley, Madō King Granzort, Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China, Mama wa Shōgaku Yonensei, Yamato Takeru, and Gekito! Crush Gear Turbo. He animated or drew storyboards for such anime as Samurai 7, Gundam Build Fighters Try, Sgt. Frog, and Speed Grapher.
He also wrote scripts for Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream, Pretty Rhythm Dear My Future, and Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live, as well as supervising the scripts in the latter.
His latest work included drawing storyboards in Shōnen Maid, Cerberus, and Shōnen Ashibe GO! GO! Goma-chan.
Numerous industry members such as Hiroki Mutaguchi, Satoshi Koike, Etsushi Mori, Mitsuo Fukuda, and Ryuichi Kimura have all extended their condolences.
