posted on by Jennifer Sherman
The Tōken Ranbu - Bakumatsu Tenrōden stage musical announced during its final performance in Tokyo on Sunday that a new Tōken Ranbu musical will run from March to April next year.
The new play will feature the characters Ishikirimaru, Nikkari Aoe, Tonbokiri, Monoyoshi Sadamune, Ookurikara, and one more character. The musical will announce the final male warrior in the future.
The Tōken Ranbu - Bakumatsu Tenrōden musical ran from September 24 to October 10 at the AiiA 2.5 Theater in Tokyo, then at the Canal City Gekijō in Fukuoka on October 15 and 16, then at the Sankei Hall Breeze in Osaka from October 21 to 30. The musical then returned to its Tokyo venue for a final run from November 17 to 27. It will also run in Shanghai on January 13-15.
Nekle Planning, DMM.com, Nitroplus, and Euclid Agency organized the musical. Isamu Kayano (Tokyo Ghoul stage play) directed, Chūji Mikasano (Tokyo Ghoul stage play) wrote the script, and Tetsuhara was in charge of choreography.
The previous stage musical adaptation of DMM's Tōken Ranbu online browser game ran at the AiiA 2.5 Theater in Tokyo last fall.
The franchise's stage play adaptation is also getting a new run that will premiere this winter. Marvelous (Yowamushi Pedal stage play) is adapting the game into a "straight play," while Nelke Planning (The Prince of Tennis, Vampire Knight musicals) is adapting it into a stage musical.
The Tōken Ranbu: Hanamaru television anime premiered on October 2. Crunchyroll is streaming the series, and Funimation is releasing English-dubbed episodes shortly after they air in Japan.
The Tōken Ranbu "sword personification training game" takes famous swords from Japanese history and interprets them as bishōnen. Nitroplus designed the characters and scenario. The game launched in Japan in 2015, and it has more than 1.5 million users. The game has acquired a large female fanbase and inspired a wide range of merchandise, as well as several manga.
