Nintendo commented on the end of Wii U console production in Japan to entertainment news source IGN on Thursday. In its statement, Nintendo revealed that all Wii U consoles for this fiscal year in North America have already shipped to retailers.
The full comment reads:
As recently posted by Nintendo on the Wii U website in Japan, Wii U production will end in the near future for the Japanese domestic market. We have nothing to announce in terms of exact timing. We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.
Nintendo updated its Japanese webpage this week to confirm that production on its Wii U console will end soon in Japan.
Company president Tatsumi Kimishima said that the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo's newly unveiled hybrid home/handheld system, will not be the successor for Nintendo's existing game hardware. Nintendo confirmed that the Switch will not be compatible with Wii U game discs or Nintendo 3DS cards, but did not comment on the possibility of the Switch running purchased downloads of Wii U or Nintendo 3DS software.
