Gundam's Kunio Ogawara Launches Crowdfund for Electric Car-Based Anime Pilot
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Gundam mechanical designer Kunio Okawara launched a crowdfunding campaign earlier this month to fund a short pilot film for an anime based on his electrical car design "Ex Machina." If successful, the pilot will be used to pitch a longer anime.
The project is seeking to raise 8 million yen (US$64,329) by September 30 on the Japanese crowdfunding service Nextwaves. As of press time the project has earned 60,000 yen (US$482).
Okawara provided concept art for what a mecha in the anime might look like:
The car itself was developed by Japanese research and development firm Four Link Systems. It is Okawara's fist foray into designing real mechanics, though Okawara was previously brought on board to design a promotional concept car for Four Link Systems' Japanese version of the Hiriko, a car designed at MIT and manufactured in Spain's Basque Country.
"Ex Machina" functions like a regular electric car, but with more moving parts to make it feel more like a mecha from an anime. The page is hosting a series of videos of the car in action.
