27th Animator Expo Short is 'Bubu & Bubulina' by Fantastic Children's Nakamura

posted on by Karen Ressler
Short will debut on Friday

The official website for Japan Anima(tor)'s Exhibition (Japan Animator Expo), the weekly anime shorts from Hideaki Anno's Studio Khara and the media company Dwango, announced on Monday that the 27th episode will be "BUBU & BUBULINA" directed by Takashi Nakamura (Fantastic Children, Harmony) at Studio Colorido. The short will debut on Friday.

Animator Expo describes the story:

A mean older sister “BUBULINA” and a serious younger sister “BUBU”

One day, a girl who had queerly long legs came before them.
Her red shoes caught the eyes of BUBULINA.
She said, “With the shoes, you can dance very well like this. Do you want to try?”
“Yes!” BUBULINA strongly nodded her head.
In the next instant, the red shoes held on to BUBULINA…!?

A unique movement special to animation depicts a cute but noisy trouble.
“A thrilling noisy action animation” by director Takashi Nakamura with all his might

The lineup for the third season of the project is as follows:

Title Director/Staff
Endless night (TBC) Sayo Yamamoto
Cassette Girl Hiroyasu Kobayashi
Kazuyoshi Katayama Project “Untitled” (TBD) Kazuyoshi Katayama
COMEDY SKIT 1989 Kazuto Nakazawa

The titles above are listed in phonetic Japanese order, and are not necessarily in the order of their scheduled release. For the third season, Japan Animator Expo is once again releasing a new episode every Friday.

Some of the shorts are currently playing in a limited two-week engagement in 10 theaters throughout Japan. The theatrical screenings are showing all 12 episodes of the first season, plus several episodes from the third season — "Conte (Hitman) 1989" ("COMEDY SKIT 1989" or "Conte Koroshita 1989"), "Bubu & Bubulina," "Bureau of Prot Society," and "The Ultraman" are all running as of August 1. "Hammerhead" screened until July 31.

Hideaki Anno himself is serving as executive producer of the entire project initiative with Dwango President Nobuo Kawakami, and he also designed the image character mascot "(Tor)-kun." Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki created the title logo, and fellow Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki colored it. The shorts mostly feature the voice talent of Ranma ½ and Cowboy Bebop co-stars Kouichi Yamadera and Megumi Hayashibara.
