The third issue of 2015 of Shueisha's Shonen Jump magazine is announcing on Monday that the upcoming new Yu-Gi-Oh! film will premiere in 2016 — 20 years after Kazuki Takahashi began his original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga in the same magazine. The film will focus on first series protagonist Yūgi Mutō and his rival Seto Kaiba. The magazine notes that the film will have a completely original story. The Jump Festa 2015 event will also host an announcement event for the film.
The issue also describes the film as follows:
In the past Yūgi Yami and Kaiba have clashed many times!! Yami Yūgi, who resides in Yūgi Mutō's body, and Kaiba will have a duel that bets their prides and accepts each other's mutual experience.
In addition, the issue reveals that the 2000 Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series will be re-mastered, also in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. The re-run will re-master certain famous battles, such as Jonochi (Joey) vs Marik and Yūgi vs Kaiba. The re-mastered program will premiere on February 7, 2015 on TV Tokyo and other related channels.
The official website for the Yu-Gi-Oh! film launched a countdown that will end on December 15. The site shows the apparent silhouettes of Yūgi and Kaiba.
International distributor 4K Media Inc. announced in June that a new Yu-Gi-Oh! movie is in development in Japan. Kristen Gray, 4K Media Inc. senior vice president, commented, “We're thrilled to bring the Yu-Gi-Oh! characters back to theater screens for their enthusiastic fan base.”
4K Media was shopping for a distributor for all territories outside of Asia, and promoted the card game and anime franchise at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.
