North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Tuesday that it acquired the MAOYU – Archenemy & Hero television anime series for home video. The Winter 2013 anime "will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow."
The original novel series by Mamare Touno (Log Horizon) centers around Yūsha (Hero), a fighter in a war that humans and demons have waged for 15 years. The humans have infiltrated the demons' territory, but Hero is separated from his three companions before he enters the castle of Maō (Demon Queen). However, the Queen is waiting for him, and instead of fighting him, she proposes an alliance. Her explanation changes his entire view of not just his purpose in battle, but the purpose of war in general.
The anime adaptation starred Ami Koshimizu as Maō and Jun Fukuyama as Yūsha. Other cast members include Chiwa Saitō, Haruka Tomatsu, Hiroshi Kamiya, Miyuki Sawashiro, and Nao Tōyama.
Takeo Takahashi (Spice and Wolf, Yosuga no Sora, So, I Can't Play H!) directed the anime at the studio ARMS. Naruhisa Arakawa (Spice and Wolf, Kingdom, So, I Can't Play H!, Listen to Me, Girls. I Am Your Father!) was in charge of the series scripts, and Masashi Kudo (Bleach, Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You, The Wings of Rean) and Hiroaki Karasu (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st animation director) designed the characters. Takeshi Hama (Kobato.) scored the music.
Crunchyroll streamed the anime into several countries as it aired in Japan.
