Kōji Seto, Kie Kitano Star in Live-Action Haganai Film

Takurō Oikawa directs early 2014 film about club for misfits with hardly any friends

The Nikkan Sports newspaper is reporting on Thursday that 25-year-old D☆DATE group member Kōji Seto (Kamen Rider Kiva, Moshidora, Tonari no 801-chan, Otomen) and 22-year-old singer/actress Kie Kitano (Jōkyō Monogatari, Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life) are starring in the previously revealed live-action film based on Yomi Hirasaka's Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Haganai) light novel series. According to the newspaper, Takurō Oikawa (The Game) is writing and directing the film.

Nikkan Sports adds that film finished shooting in June, and it will open early next year. For the male lead role, Seto turned his hair blond for the first time in his life. He added that he felt he was destined for this film role, since he himself has hardly any friends. Hirasaka emphasized that the staff wanted to make a standalone work, and not simply recreate the story of the original school romantic comedy novel series.

Hirasaka and Buriki's original Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai light novels revolve around Kodaka (Seto) — a half-Japanese/half-British transfer student whose delinquent-like blonde hair and fierce eyes scare people — and a seemingly perpetually sullen girl named Yozora (Kitano). The two decide to form Rinjinbu, a club for misfits with hardly any friends.

The light novel series' eight volumes have 5.55 million copies in print. It already inspired two television anime series with video anime spinoffs as well as manga.
