Libraries Offer Manga Ent. Titles for Digital Borrowing
posted on by Egan Loo
Overdrive, a distributor of digital library materials, announced this month that it is offering Manga Entertainment anime for free "borrowing" via time-limited digital downloads on participating library websites. For example, patrons of the Brooklyn Public Library can already download temporary copies of Kai Doh Maru, Macross II, Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, and Read or Die from their home computer. The Chicago Public Library offers Black Jack, Blood: The Last Vampire, The Castle of Cagliostro, Dead Leaves, Ghost in the Shell, Macross II, Macross Plus, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, and Read or Die. The anime titles are part of the larger collection from Starz Media that also includes Hellboy animation and Masters of Horror.
The system requires its own Overdrive Media Console software that runs on Microsoft Windows for copy protection and restrictions. The resulting Windows Media Video (WMV) files can be downloaded to some portable devices, but not Apple iPods and other media players that do not support protected WMV files.
