posted on by Egan Loo
The Toronto International Film Festival has announced that it will screen the North American premieres of Mamoru Oshii's The Sky Crawlers anime film and Toshio Lee's manga-based live-action Detroit Metal City film in September. Oshii directs his first animated film in four years with his adaptation of Hiroshi Mori's military romance novels that are set on a alternate-history world. The Sky Crawlers' cast includes Oscar-nominated Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Ryo Kase (Letters From Iwo Jima, Cutey Honey, Honey and Clover), Chiaki Kuriyama (Battle Royale, Kill Bill) and Shōsuke Tanihara (Vexille, Lovely Complex, Fudoh: The New Generation).
Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note's L) stars in Detroit Metal City, the comedy about a soft pop crooner's unlikely rise to glory as the lead singer of a death metal band. The film adapts Kiminori Wakasugi's popular manga of the same name. The movie will screen on September 5 at one minute before midnight, and more screenings will be announced on August 26. The festival will run from September 4 to September 13.
