Viz Vice President Discusses Original Comic Plans
posted on by Egan Loo
Store manager and comic freelancer Christopher Butcher talked with Marc Weidenbaum, the editor-in-chief of Viz Media's manga magazines and the newly appointed "Vice President, Original Publishing," about the publisher's original comic plans at New York Comic Con last weekend. Weidenbaum discussed Viz Media's plan to adapt a modified version of the creator-editor collaboration system used in Japanese manga companies, and emphasized that the creators would own the works. He also emphasized that his company is not soliciting submissions, but instead is looking for completed works with strong narrative storytelling in any genre.
In the past, Viz Media has commissioned, or created in-house, a Shojo Beat magazine cover by Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), Ashura Benimaru and Gerard Jones' Pokémon newspaper comic strip, and Annette Roman's 1 World Manga series for the World Bank.
