In 2002, the American anime business topped $4,359,110,000 (appx. 520,000,000,000 yen). This information is according to the Nihon Boueki Shinkou-kai (JETRO). Thanks to Spirited Away's Academy Award, Asahi believes the market for Japanese animation will expand further.
A breakdown of the items in the market include toys, games and character product licensing (including TV broadcasting) accounted for $3,937,000,000. Video and DVD sales accounted for $414,000,000, and movie ticket receipts earned another $8,110,000.
Associated with the market's growth, in 2002 anime fans held over 18 conventions totalling over 100,000 attendees. Combined participation fees amounted to $3,549,000.
[UPDATE: In the initial posting of this article, we confused the Chinese-numerical "100,000,000" as "10,000,000", which lead to a value discrepancy of a factor of 10. ANN apologizes for the numerical error. The above values now accurately reflect the Asahi article. -C]
Editor's note: It is Asahi's belief that Spirited Away will have a significant impact on the Anime Market, ANN does not necessarily agree with that sentiment.
