Rowling sues newspaper over early Potter preview

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Precedent setting?

In a potentially precedent setting lawsuit, J.K. Rowling has sued the Daily News for $100 million. The news paper printed a preview of her upcoming Harry Potter novel based on a copy they purchased at a Brooklyn bookstore; the bookstore accidentally made the book available to the public before the proper release date.

In the Anime industry it is entirely common for stores, most often brick and mortar, but occasionally online, to make titles available (or ship them in the case of online stores) before the official street date. This is referred to as "breaking street [date]." So far, no major action has been taken by any Anime distributors against this frequent occurence.

More details about the lawsuit can be read here.
