Anime Nominated for Oscars
posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Spirited Away and Mt. Head nominated for 1 Oscar each, become first Anime ever nominated.
Spirited Away and Mt. Head today jointly became the first ever Anime to be nominated for Academy Awards. Spirited Away was nominated in the Animated Feature Film category, along with Ice Age, Lilo & Stitch, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and Treasure Planet. While Koji Yamamura's Mt. Head was nominated in the Short Film (Animated) category.
The Short Film (Animated) category has been around for several years, but the Oscar in Animated Feature Film category was first given away last year to Shrek.
There had been speculation of Spirited Away being nominated in other categories, such as Music (score) and even Best Picture but in the end, Animated Feature Film was the only category in which it was nominated. Lilo & Stitch is generally considered as being Spirited Away's biggest rival for the Oscar.
Thank you to Cesar Soriano of USA Today for pointing out to us that Mt. Head was also nominated.
The full list of nominees for other categories can be read at Oscar.com.
