posted on
The Chinese anime known to Mandarin speakers as "Xiao Xian" (given the English title "Chinese Ghost Story") has been licensed for release by Viz Video. Directed by Tsui Hark (of the American films Double Team and Knock Off), who also directed the first of the Chinese Ghost Story live action trilogy, the anime combines the talents of Hong Kong and Japanese studios.
According to Animerica Online, the plot involves an honest debt collector named Ning Choy Sun, who accidentally wanders into a ghost city, and falls for a concieted ghost named Siu Seen, who is searching for young men's souls for her "monsterous mistress" Lau Lau. The two flee together, evading ghost hunters.
Chinese Ghost Story features character design by Frankie Chung, art direction by Andrew Chen, and character animation direction by Tatsuya Endō (I'll Make a Habit of It!), and backgrounds by Takeshi Nakamura (Doraemon, Lupin III). Animation production by Triangle Staff. Animerica Online reports that a home video release is planned for 1999.
