Fan-Made Firefox Extension Changes JoJo Part 5 Stands to Original Names
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Due to murky music copyright issues, the Stand names in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime series are usually translated with substitute names. The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind season continues this trend. Giorno Giovanna's Stand Gold Experience, a reference to a Prince album, becomes Golden Wind. Other Stand name substitutions include Sticky Fingers (a Rolling Stones album) as Zipper Man, Purple Haze (a Jimi Hendrix song) as Purple Smoke, Moody Blues (a band) as Moody Jazz, Aerosmith (a band) as Li'l Bomber, and Sex Pistols (a band) as Six Pistols.
Some viewers might find the subtitle change jarring when the characters can clearly be heard saying something else. A Mozilla Firefox browser extension by Arara changes the subtitles on Crunchyroll so the original Stand names. Currently the add-on only affects subtitles for Golden Wind anime. The description also includes this caveat:
For copyright reasons, Crunchyroll has to change the Stand names in their subtitles for the show JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, removing any references to the multitude of bands and songs from the script. This plugin readds those references. Please note that, by using this add-on, Warner Japan and Hirohiko Araki-sensei will get a bit angry with you. Use it at your own risk.
Similarly, a Google Chrome browser extension was released in June to add the original ending theme song to Netflix's Neon Genesis Evangelion release. The release did not include the various renditions of "Fly Me to the Moon" and instead replaced it with an instrumental track from the anime's soundtrack.
