Pop Team Epic's 'Hellshake Yano' Makes Top 3 Buzzwords for 2018 (1st Half)
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Every year there's a multitude of lists recognizing trending catchphrases on the internet. Some are dedicated solely to anime while the Ryūkōgo Taishō buzzword contest looks at all phrases across the board. Last year, both Kemono Friends and DMM's Touken Ranbu managed to infiltrate the mainstream buzzword list.
This year is only half way done, but Pop Team Epic, Comic Girls, and A Place Further Than the Universe are already dominating the animation category of Gadget Tsūshin's Anime Ryūkōgo Taishō awards' first half. Gadget Tsūshin crowned "Karuku Shinemasu ne" (Could just die right now), both a name of a track from the anime's original soundtrack and a catch phrase for character Yuzuki Shiraishi, as the top choice.
Following closely behind is "Abababa" from Comic Girls, a sound uttered by the pink-haired Kaoruko Moeta. In third place is a tie between "Hellshake Yano" from Pop Team Epic and "Aitaa!" (Owwie!) from Hinamatsuri. Various background characters usually exclaim "Aitaa!" when they're hit or hurt at any point in the series.
Pop Team Epic might have only tied for third, by several more phrases from the series were also contenders to make it into the top three. "Kuso anime" (Crappy anime), a term regularly used to describe the show officially made the list, as well as "Eh, eh you upset?", "Eisai Haramasukoi!", "So, you're a hater", "A...whole...lot", and "Bobunemimimmi".
Other anime with currently trending phrases are Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner, Golden Kamuy, Laid-Back Camp, Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody, Uma Musume Pretty Derby, Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san, Ms. Koizumi loves ramen noodles, and Tada Never Falls in Love.
