Shibuya's "Scramble" Crossing is its own sort of landmark for the Tokyo district. The high-traffic pedestrian crossing can see thousands pace from one side to another during peak hours. But, the area didn't always look that way.
A four-dimensional short anime titled Tokino Kōsa (Shibuya Vernacular) will start at the very beginning of Shibuya Crossing, that is, 10,000 years in the past. The anime is part of a collaborative project helmed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya. Shinomiya may be best known for his work as a key visual and background artist, previously contributing to Makoto Shinkai's your name., The Garden of Words, and Children Who Chase Lost Voices films. He not only directed the short but is also responsible for the character designs and art direction.
Shinomiya is joined on the project by producer Ryoichiro Matsuo and creative director Hiroaki Matsu. The animation was produced by CLAP and stars model Yane.
The project also has a crowdfunding campaign to raise 1,800,000 yen (US$16,500) to hold a exhibition of the production materials in Shibuya in mid-August.
