American rock group KISS and Japanese idol group Momoiro Clover Z joined forces last year on a new track "Yume no Ukiyo ni Saitemina." The song got a full animated and live-action music video with art by Sushio (Kill la Kill) and got a huge digital launch in 120 countries. Japan marked the event with an official postage stamp.
This year the group is returning to Japan—in the form of traditional ukiyo-e art prints. The prints are being revealed this weekend as part of Grammy Week at the Morrison Hotel Gallery at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood. A total of 200 first-edition prints signed by KISS will be available for purchase. Production on the artwork first started in 2014 and took a team of Japanese artisans nearly a year to complete.
The prints show the band members as samurai, oni, and with Momoiro Clover Z. Traditional works like "The Forty-seven Ronin" were used for inspiration.
The Japanese Kiss Army store lists the signed prints as 237,600 yen (US$2,085) and unsigned prints as 108,000 yen (US$948).
Pop culture ukiyo-e prints are currently on the rise. The traditional Japanese art form is finding new popularity with prints based on Lupin the Third, Ghost in the Shell, and Star Wars.
