Red Bull Flugtag Competition Dumps Gundam Into Kobe's Harbor
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Every year the Red Bull Flugtag tasks amateur flight enthusiasts to create their own human-powered machine under specific rules, and fly it off a pier to see how far it will go. Some make serious attempts while others look at the event as an excuse to create a comedic stage piece to throw into the water. The competition is held at multiple locations around the world, with locations this year in Oslo, Norway; Portland, Oregon; Gothenburg, Sweden; Moscow, Russia; and finally Kobe, Japan.
The first ever Japanese iteration of the event took place on Halloween and garnered 20,000 spectators. The group turned out to see some crazy flying machines, so imagine the crowd's astonishment when a Gundam arrived for takeoff, only to drop flat into Kobe Harbor.

This isn't exactly what the Gundam Global Challenge had in mind.
You can take a look at the competition's other entries, from a giant shurikan to a kimono-clad kabuki actor surfing on a geisha, below. First place went to the pink hang-glider seen at the end of the video.
