Bandai previewed its annual Tamashii Nation showcase event to the press on Thursday. This year, it unleashed a surge of Macross items, as it ramps up for the upcoming science-fiction television anime Macross Delta.
It teased a 1/1,800-scale, 26-inch (67-centimeter) SDF-1 Macross from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? film, complete with (1/700-scale) VF-1 Valkyrie fighters and enemy Zentradi battlepods in the Micro Macross toy line. The previous largest toy of the Macross spaceship was "only" 1/3,000-scale at 15 inches (40 centimeters) tall.
It also teased (with no photographs allowed) a 1/35-scale DX Chōgōkin VF-1J Valkyrie Battroid that stands 14 inches (36 centimeters) high with light-up sensors and lights. The largest transforming VF-1J fighter toy was "only" 10.4 inches (26 centimeters) high at 1/48-scale.
Also on display was the newly announced transformable VF-31 Siegfried fighter from Macross Delta. The Sv-262 Draken III in the same DX Chōgōkin lineup was also on display, but photographs were prohibited.
Visitors could pose for photos next to a 1/6-scale VF-31 Siegfried statue — as tall as a basketball player — along with the much smaller life-size standee of the new anime's idol heroine Feyja Wion. Fans can also watch a "holographic" concert of the idols Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee from the Macross Frontier anime.
Even as Macross moves forward, it still has an eye on the past -- here are some of the variable fighter and enemy mecha toys teased in its 1/100-scale Hi-Metal R line:
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross/Macross: Do You Remember Love?: Regult (February 2016), VF-1S Strike Valkyrie (Hikaru in November, Focker in April 2016), Glaug (May 2016)
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again: VF-2SS Valkyrie II (Nexx and Silvie with SAP)
Macross Zero: VF-0A Phoenix
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012: VF-4 Lightning III
In its larger 1/60-scale DX Chōgōkin line, Bandai will offer:
Macross Plus: YF-19
Macross 7: VF-19 Custom Excalibur (Basara Nekki Special)
