Nissan's Ultimate BBQ Vehicle Offers Otaku a Taste of the Great Outdoors
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Nissan Japan introduced its "Ultimate Smart BBQ Vehicle" concept car in February. If it was rolled out on April 1, the whole premise would be laughed off as a joke. An electric car that's primary function is cooking outside? It offers sonar mosquito repellent? A selfie-camera drone and a window that turns into a display? The concept isn't a joke though, and was created in part for the Green Funding Lab crowdfunding project in Japan.
Needless to say, Nissan and the Japan BBQ Association successfully raised 1,105,000 yen (about US$9,288) for the converted electric e-NV200 van.
Nissan even brought the car to last weekend's Niconico Chokaigi fan convention to offer otaku a "live-streaming display of a real-life BBQ" so that they could enjoy outdoors activities in "real life." The presentation's premise seems to be mistaking otaku with the NEET stereotype. Still, visitors did sit down to enjoy a picnic with the booth staff.
