CNN Newscasters Can't Handle Funasshi Mascot
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Major news network CNN recently did an interest piece on the regional mascot craze in Japan. Correspondent Will Ripley took to the streets of Japan to get a coveted interview with Funasshi, the unofficial but very successful pear-fairy mascot of Funabashi City. As one of the few mascots that talk, Ripley sought out the exuberant yellow Funasshi to ask it a few questions.
Back at CNN's station in Hong Kong, newscaster Kristie Lu Stout found Funasshi's antics too much to handle.
Funasshi is very popular despite its unofficial status. It was voted the top mascot in the Regional Mascot General Election in August, got its own manga series in Shogakukan's Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special, and got her own theme song released by Universal Music Japan.
You can follow Funasshi's exploits on Twitter and its official website. Another popular mascot, Kumamoto Prefecture's bear mascot Kumamon, is making his international debut this year.
