Space Brothers Real Escape Game Stumps Hundreds
posted on by Chris Nishijima
Two weeks ago, 451 teams made up of 6 astronauts each were trapped in a moon base that was quickly running out of oxygen. They all had just enough oxygen to last them an hour, while they attempted to find a way to escape their fates. But wait a minute, you say, wouldn't this kind of thing be on the front of the New York Times? Maybe normally, but this time it turns out that this was all part of one of SCRAP's Real Escape Games.
May 22 marked the start of the SCRAP America's five day run of "Escape From the Moon Base" in San Francisco, an original Real Escape Game based off of Chūya Koyama's Space Brothers manga. The Japanese version of the game was inspired by an interview between SCRAP's Founder, Takao Kato, and Yōhei Sadogashima, the editor of Kodansha's Weekly Morning magazine, which serializes Space Brothers. In total, only 16 of the 451 teams were able to succeed at escaping the game in time.
"Escape From the Moon Base" is one of two anime-based Real Escape Games that made it to the United States branch of SCRAP, the first was "Escape From An Angel," based off of Neon Genesis Evangelion. On top of these, SCRAP of Japan hosted games based off of series such as One Piece, Death Note, Detective Conan, and Attack on Titan. When asked on the possibility of bringing more anime-based games over to the United States, American SCRAP branch director Kazu stated, "We would like to bring Attack on Titan games to the U.S., but we cannot say anything about it."
"Escape From the Moon Base" also saw the announcement of SCRAP's "1000 Treasure Hunters" for 2014. Originally held at San Francisco's J-Pop Summit in 2013, SCRAP brought the game back due to popular demand. Unlike most of SCRAP's other games, the point of "1000 Treasure Hunters" will not be to escape in any specific time limit, but to find hidden treasure by solving puzzles hidden throughout town. Tickets for the event are not on sale yet, but you can keep posted by visiting SCRAP of America's official webpage.
