Police in Hokuei, the hometown of Detective Conan manga creator Gōshō Aoyama, are investigating the defacing of two bronze statues of the pint-sized detective this week. On Monday morning, a male passerby discovered that the magnifying glass was missing from one of the 60-centimeter-tall (about 2-foot tall) statues, while the snorkel pipe on the other statue was bent.
It will cost an estimated 500,000 yen (US$6,000) to repair the damage. There were nine similar instances of defacement between 2000 and 2007, and it cost 3.5 million yen (US$44,000) to repair the damage for those incidents.
The town in Tottori Prefecture erected the statues on both ends of its Conan Bridge in honor of its most famous citizen. The town opened the nearby Gōshō Aoyama Manga Factory museum in 2007.
