French Breeder Names Rose Variety After Rose of Versailles Manga
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
French rose growers Meilland International SA created a strain of roses named "Rose of Versailles" after the shojo manga by Riyoko Ikeda. The manga celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and the roses were bred to commemorate that event. France recently saw a release of the manga from 2002 to 2005.
The breed will debut in May at the International Rose Gardening Show at the Seibu Dome in Tokorozawa, Saitama before being planted at the Keisei Rose Garden in Yachiyo City.
Meilland International SA is a family-owned rose breeder that was established in 1850. Meilland's roses have won many awards with gardens in France, Morocco, Spain, the Netherlands, and California. Meilland owns 1,000 patents and 600 trademarks for its roses. Meilland often name its breeds after historical and current notable people.
