Yoko Kanno, Yuki Team Up for Sakamichi no Apollon Song
posted on by Egan Loo
Prolific soundtrack composer Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus/Frontier, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and former Judy and Mary vocalist YUKI are teaming up to make "Sakamichi no Melody," the opening theme song for next month's Sakamichi no Apollon anime series. YUKI wrote the lyrics, while Kanno composed the music.
It has been six years since YUKI last contributed a song to an anime on Fuji TV's late-night Noitamina programming block; YUKI performed theme songs for both seasons of Honey and Clover. Kanno is also producing the rest of the soundtrack for Sakamichi no Apollon, which is being directed by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe. The CD single with both "Sakamichi no Melody" and another song, "Play Ball," will go on sale on May 2.
The Sakamichi no Apollon anime adapts Yūki Kodama's manga of the same name. In the coming-of-age story of "love, friendship, and music," a naive boy and a scruffy boy share a passion for jazz in a provincial town in the late 1960s. The manga won the General Category in this year's Shogakukan Manga Awards.
