Gunsmith Cats creator Kenichi Sonoda's favorite movies include The Blues Brothers, Vanishing Point and the original Gone in 60 Seconds. These films inspired him to conceptualize the series.

To capture the essence of the setting, the Gunsmith Cats production team traveled to Chicago, IL, and studied the city's landscape and traffic system. They also went to Los Angeles, CA, for firearms testing and audio sampling of an actual 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

In the second episode, there is a car with a license plate that has NCC-1701 on it.

In Episode 1 the sample weapons Washington shows Rally are the prosthetic Weapons used by Bonnie and Grey from the Manga.
