The proposal for this series was actually set up before the start of development stages for "Be Forever Yamato", the movie of which this is a sequel.

According to Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the sun crisis concept seen in this series was originally intended for "Be Forever Yamato", but he decided to make a change of plans when his colleague Leiji Matsumoto advised him that this concept would be more suited for an extended T.V. series and that "Be Forever Yamato" should be more character focused.

Tim Eldred created webcomic series "The Bolar Wars: Extended", which retells "Space Battleship Yamato III" with story ideas that ended up rejected when show itself had to be reduced to 25 episodes due to poor ratings.

Yoshito Yasuhara could not play Kenjirō Ōta in this series because he was starring in Tōshi Gordian at that time.
