Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation's A Silent Voice anime film opened in China last Friday and earned 32 million yuan (500 million yen or about US$4.95 million) in its opening weekend. The film opened in 3,000 theaters in China, and singer Leah Dou also provided her new "See You Again" song as an insert song for the Chinese version of the film.
The film opened in Japan in September 2016. Eleven Arts will screen the film in United States theaters starting on October 20. The company previously screened the film at Anime Expo in July.
Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation's anime film is based on Yoshitoki Ōima's manga of the same name. Anime Limited screened the film in the United Kingdom and Ireland in March. Viz Media Europe acquired the rights to distribute the film in the European Union, Russia, Turkey, and French-speaking African countries.
Crunchyroll describes the original manga's story:
I wish we had never met. I wish we could meet once again.
A boy who can hear, Shoya Ishida, and a transfer student who can't, Shoko Nishimiya. One fateful day, the two meet, and Shoya leads the class in bullying Shoko. But before long, the class shifts its target from Shoko to Shoya. Years later, Shoya feels strongly that he must see Shoko once again.
The film earned 2.3 billion yen in Japan, and was the 19th highest-grossing film released in Japan in 2016.
