Visual Art's/Key opened a new website on Monday with a countdown and the text "Rewrite New Project." The countdown will end on Thursday.
The original 2011 Rewrite visual novel takes place in Kazamatsuri, a fictional city where civilization and greenery co-exist. Within it, players assume the role of student Kotaro Tennoji and interact with his fellow classmates Kotori Kanbe, Chihaya Ohtori, Akane Senri, Shizuru Nakatsu, and Lucia Konohana.
Itaru Hinoue (AIR, Kanon, CLANNAD), who recently left Visual Art's, served as the game's project creator and main illustrator. Romeo Tanaka, Ryukishi07 (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Umineko no Naku Koro ni) and Yūto Tonokawa (Little Busters!) wrote the game's storyline scenarios. Jun Maeda (AIR, CLANNAD, Angel Beats!) was involved with the musical compositions and quality control. The original game was also ported to the PSP and PS Vita systems in 2014, followed by a PS3 version in February 2015.
Visual Art's Key brand released the Rewrite+ version of the game on PC in Japan on July 29. The game will get a PS4 version with content from the Rewrite+ version in 2017.
Visual Art's will release the game in the West.
The original game inspired a television anime series that premiered on July 2 that features the same voice cast as the game. The anime portrays a "sixth" route left untold in the game, which tells the story of "that girl." Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan. The anime will get a second season in January.
